We’re excited to unveil Magnus Box Version 23.11.4, a transformative update designed to empower our partners with cutting-edge capabilities. This release introduces six innovative features, including the much-anticipated VMware Protected Item type for seamless backups, alongside 21 enhancements and 18 bug fixes to ensure a smoother user experience. From silent installation options to enhanced policy enforcement and significant performance improvements, we’ve tailored this update to meet the evolving needs of our partners and their clients. With Magnus Box, partners are equipped to offer unparalleled backup and restoration solutions, reinforcing our commitment to leading the way in data protection and recovery services.

New Features:

  • Added new VMware Protected Item type. Magnus Box supports both the free and paid versions of VMware ESXi for backups and restores.
  • Added a lobby option to the Magnus Box desktop app installers, allowing for silent installation with fully remote device authentication via the Devices page in the Magnus Box web interface.
  • Updated the name of the Connected Devices page to Devices in the Magnus Box web interface and redesigned the page to show all devices.
  • Added bulk actions to the Devices page in the Magnus Box web interface.
  • Support was added for restoring Disk image backups as VMware-compatible virtual disks.
  • Added the ability to enforce policies created by a top-level administrator onto tenant administrators and tenant users. This allows top-level administrators to enforce settings and preferences across an entire Server.

Enhancements:

  • Protected Item types that are incompatible with the device operating system will now be greyed out and disabled in the Magnus Box web interface.
  • Added the ability to mark jobs that are stuck in the running state as abandoned if they are unable to be canceled in the Magnus Box web interface.
  • Changed clients on Linux platforms to log to stdin/stderr for background services.
  • Improved the performance of restoring data from backups that contain large amounts of blank data, such as Disk Images.
  • Added logging of the reason the job started at the beginning of backup job logs.
  • Added option to aggregate usage by Account Name for Gradient PSA integration.
  • Added automatic cancellation of running jobs using a Storage Vault when that Storage Vault is deleted.
  • Improved the appearance of the “About” window in the Magnus Box Service Manager.
  • Reduced memory usage when loading large index files from Magnus Box Storage Role-type Storage Vaults.
  • Renamed “Restore files and folders” to “Granular restore” when restoring files and folders from a Disk Image or Hyper-V backup.
  • Added ability to configure server audit file logging from the Magnus Box web interface.
  • Significantly improved the speed of granular restores from Disk Image backups.
  • Improved the performance of restoring files and/or folders from Disk Image backups.
  • Significantly improved performance when restoring directories containing only a few files from a File and Folder Protected Item.
  • Updated the Activity browser filter names in the Magnus Box desktop app to better clarify their functionality.
  • Slightly changed the appearance of the Magnus Box desktop app About dialog.
  • Improve the security posture of the Magnus Box web interface by adding additional XSS protections.
  • Updated the preconfigured exclusion list for File and Folder Protected Items on the Magnus Box web interface with valid exclusions.
  • Lowered memory usage when uploading to S3-backed Storage Vaults in some use cases.
  • Removed the device dropdown in the Magnus Box web interface when adding a Protected Item when there’s only one device.
  • Improved the admin accounts dialogue to have a separate Policies tab in the Magnus Box web interface.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue with the Magnus Box web interface showing an internal error popup when the server is first started.
  • Fixed an issue with the Magnus Box web interface throwing an error before valid VMware credentials have been added.
  • Fixed an issue with email settings.
  • Fixed an issue with remote registration failing to authenticate users when being used by a tenant admin.
  • Fixed an issue with listing Sharepoint sites that can occasionally overload a SharePoint server.
  • Fixed an issue with the Magnus Box web interface Server menu / navigation section being absent immediately following login when the Software Build Role is disabled.
  • Fixed an issue with symlinks failing to restore correctly from Disk Image backups, causing the restore job to fail.
  • Fixed an issue with relative symlinks being restored as links into the Magnus Box desktop app’s installation directory.
  • Fixed an issue with VMware backup attempting to back up PSF files. PSF files for vSphere Replication will now be ignored.
  • Fixed an issue with VMware backup where quiesce snapshots create two files instead of one.
  • Fixed an issue with VMware backup when a virtual machine directory is located more than a level deep from the datastore root.
  • Fixed an issue with an incorrect check of allocated areas during VMware vSphere backup.
  • Fixed an issue with the policy option “Always require password to open the application interface” not working when enabled.
  • Fixed an issue causing search filters to incorrectly show as [object Object] instead of a searchable parameter in the Magnus Box web interface.
  • Fixed an issue preventing retention passes from finishing when deleting versioned objects from a S3 storage vault with Object Lock enabled.
  • Fixed an issue causing restores to crash if the restore failed to enter a directory (e.g. due to a permissions error preventing it from being created).
  • Fixed an issue causing Microsoft Office 365 backups to fail when receiving an unexpected orientation response from the Graph API.
  • Fixed an issue with certain system directories being incorrectly reported as 0-byte files when selecting files and folders for a granular restore from Hyper-V, Disk Image, and VMware Protected items.
